Safety at Xmas Information
Facts and Figures
The main causes of accidents at christmas are due to unfamiliar
new toys, lit candles and christmas decorations.
Toys
- Approximately 35,000 children under the age of fifteen go into hospital
every year following an accident with a toy.
- Choking due to small parts and unsuitable toys for specific age group.
- Tripping over toys left on stairs or in the middle of the floor.
- Sit and ride toys.
- Second hand toys that may be in need of repair.
- Toys without Lion mark or BS standard or CE mark. Have not past safety regulations.
Buy toys from reputable retailers.
- Toys with sharp edges or points
- Toys that fire missiles could cause eye injuries
- Remove plastic bags before giving toys to small children - they could suffocate.
Burns
- Lit candles may be knocked over by an inquisitive toddler especially if
they are not placed in appropriate containers or holders.
- Babies and toddlers are attracted to the light from candles so they should
never be left alone in a room where candles are in their reach.
- Candles must always be extinguished prior to leaving the house or going
to bed.
Christmas Trees & Decorations
- Artifical trees are better as they do not drop needles.
- Make sure trees are securely fastened so toddlers are unable to pull them
over onto themselves.
- Tree decorations and lights should not be hanging down in easy reach of
toddlers.
- Do not give baubles or similar type of decoration to small children or babies
to play with, as they may shatter and cause injury
