Water Safety - Safety Stories

Below is a poem highlighting the dangers of playing around water.

Going For A Swim

It was a bright and breezy sunny day
Not a single cloud was in the way
The grass was green, the sky was blue
Three boys were wondering what to do.
They had climbed a tree and scraped their knees
Disturbed a nest and got chased by bees
A den they built, in which to hide
And watch the people from inside.
They had tried rolling down a hill
But half way down they all felt ill
They’d found a sign and changed the words
And thrown small stones at passing birds.
As the day wore on their boredom grew
Now they were wondering what to do.
Then a friend walked by with his pal
On their way to swim in the canal
The boys thought this a great idea
Not far to go, the canal was near.
They were really hot when they arrived
So without a pause in they dived.
The water was dark and icy cold
But the boys were feeling brave and bold
They swam and splashed and messed about
Until they heard a frightened shout.
They had no time to pause and wonder
One of them had been pulled under
They swam to the spot where he went down
If nothing was done he would drown.
To find him they all dived below
But they could not see where to go
They felt his arm and pulled it higher
But his feet were caught in strands of wire.
They swam to the bottom to find the cause
And found two trolleys from Asda stores
The wire was lying all over the place
One boy cut his hand and another his face.
They tried and tried to get him free
But sadly this was not to be
The other boys know he would still be here
If from the canal they had kept clear
Too late the boys learnt to stay away
But they will never forget that day.
